“The deep, luminous sound of Dexter Gordon, resurrected in a true piece of craftsmanship.”
The world’s first high-precision CNC reproduction of the legendary B. Dukoff Hollywood 1949 mouthpiece, played, felt, and recreated with exacting precision.
The return of a jazz legend
Rediscover the “Dukoff Hollywood” tenor metal saxophone mouthpiece, an exceptional piece brought back to life with passion.
The first high-precision CNC reproduction of the legendary Bobby Dukoff “Hollywood” model , played notably by Dexter Gordon, this legendary mouthpiece has never before been made to this level of precision.
Produced in only a few hundred examples in 1949, the “Hollywood” is the Holy Grail of vintage metal mouthpieces. This is the original model with the scooped walls, the one that collectors and saxophonists the world over still seek out today for over $2,000 in good condition.
This contemporary reproduction recreates every acoustic nuance and playing feel, thanks to a meticulous combination of 3D modeling, high-precision CNC machining and hand-crafted refacing – as close as possible to the requirements of the period – modeled directly from an original, numbered 1949 piece in pristine condition. Each mouthpiece is also fitted with a white dental plate, reproducing the iconic design of the original 1949 model.
For those looking for the exact configuration played by Dexter GORDON, please note that he played a 6* opening with a very long special facing and hard reeds (typical of vintage mouthpieces from the 30s, 40s and early 50s):
– You can order a 6* with this “Special Dexter GORDON” facing (by specifying it in the order comment). To be chosen if you accept a very different playing comfort from modern medium-length facings, and are willing to play harder reeds than you’re used to on a 6*. This is what will give you the closest result to Dexter Gordon’s mouthpiece, and is also the most demanding to play.
– Or you can order a 6* with medium standard facing (no need to specify in this case). You’ll then have the same opening as Dexter GORDON with a sound that’s extremely close, and the comfort of a modern mouthpiece with standard medium-strength reeds.
Philippe – Becs d’Autan craftsman:
“I made this mouthpiece with the same obsession as if I had to play it myself on stage.
I sought to recreate that rare blend of suppleness and authority, depth and clarity.
The original Hollywood has always fascinated me: I wanted it to live again, down to the note.”
