What John thinks of his MB1 :
John Brenner discovered the Les Becs d’Autan MB1 through a video on Instagram. When he first heard it, his immediate reaction was: “Wow! The sound and the grain were really interesting.” At the time, he was looking for “a change in the sound I was producing.”
He then had a long conversation with Philippe about his playing, his influences, and his needs. He now plays the gold-plated MB1, size 8. From the very first notes, he was impressed by “the consistency across the different registers.” He also highlights “intonation” and “the power in the altissimo register.” He finds the mouthpiece “very, very, very comfortable” to play and particularly appreciates “the ease of sound production,” which he describes as “very, very easy.”
He describes his sound as “powerful, with a certain warmth and roundness.” At the same time, he can easily achieve “something a little more aggressive, much more rock-oriented.” For him, the MB1 is “very complete in terms of sound and across the different registers.” He was looking for a sound that was “powerful, centered and in tune” — three qualities that the MB1 provides. Above all, he appreciates its “very rich and varied tonal palette.” He recommends it to experienced saxophonists who want “to change mouthpieces to achieve a different sound.”
