MB1: A trip back to the 80s…

The MB1 is a meticulous recreation of the numbered Dave Guardala mouthpieces from the ’80s—now rare or overpriced on the vintage market (often over $2,000 for a clean original). Every design detail has been reproduced: internal and external geometry, weight, the original “Dave Guardala” facing curve measured from a pristine period piece, and the interior/exterior finish.

The bite plate is made from premium natural German ebonite—more refined and durable than the pink resin found on original Guardala models. Subtle variations in marbling from plate to plate make every mouthpiece unique.
The goal was to create a unique model, not a simple copy. The colors pay tribute to Dave Guardala and Michael Brecker. After discussions with saxophonists, the album artwork of Return of the Brecker Brothers (1992) became a major source of inspiration.
The pink recalls the handmade Guardala pieces, while the pink-and-green marbled motif evokes the ’80s–’90s “Brecker fusion” universe symbolizing the link between Brecker’s career and Guardala’s work.

The result? A powerful, incisive, sharp, and electric mouthpiece purpose-built for modern playing and big stages while honoring the soul of the originals that marked tenor sax history.

MB1 Pilgrimage: Michael Brecker’s legendary last setup, recreated.

The MB1 – Pilgrimage is a respectful recreation of Michael Brecker’s final mouthpiece, heard on his posthumous masterpiece Pilgrimage. This tenor saxophone mouthpiece was never mass-produced; it was a unique piece, specially modified for him from an original MB1.

At his request, the step baffle was softened and extended into a long roll-over, a major transformation that deeply changes the character of the mouthpiece:

– Softer, more vocal attack
– Warmer, denser, more expressive tone
– Powerful yet broader and more controlled projection
– Increased versatility and flexibility

Reproducing this unique mouthpiece required patience, precision, and passion. We analyzed the few available archives, cross-checked testimonies, and experimented at length to recover the exact settings of this exceptional piece.

The facing is also an “original Dave Guardala” curve, but longer. For reference, pairing this curve with a .117 tip opening (between 8* and 9) is the best choice for players who want a setup closest to what M. Brecker played. Of course, you can order other openings.
