“The Guardala legacy. The Brecker spirit.”
We are proud to present two new metal tenor saxophone mouthpieces designed for players seeking a legendary tone—rooted in history yet perfected for contemporary expression.
Pilgrimage: Expressiveness, power, flexibility…
The Pilgrimage is faithfully inspired by the legendary Dave Guardala numbered guitars of the 1980s, which have become impossible to find or prohibitively expensive on the second-hand market (more than $2,000 for an original in good condition). Every design detail has been reproduced: internal and external geometry, weight, the original “Dave Guardala” facing curve measured from a pristine period piece, and the interior/exterior finish.
The bite plate is made from premium natural German ebonite—more refined and durable than the pink resin found on original Guardala models. Subtle variations in marbling from plate to plate make every mouthpiece unique.
The goal was to create a unique model, not a simple copy. The colors pay tribute to Dave Guardala and Michael Brecker. After discussions with saxophonists, the album artwork of Return of the Brecker Brothers (1992) became a major source of inspiration.
The pink recalls the handmade Guardala pieces, while the pink-and-green marbled motif evokes the ’80s–’90s “Brecker fusion” universe symbolizing the link between Brecker’s career and Guardala’s work.
Pilgrimage: Michael Brecker’s legendary last setup, recreated.
The Pilgrimage is a respectful recreation of Michael Brecker’s final mouthpiece, heard on his posthumous masterpiece Pilgrimage. This tenor saxophone mouthpiece was never mass-produced; it was a unique piece, specially modified for him from an original MB1. This is also how I make the Pilgrimage model: I start with an MB1, which I methodically modify.
At his request, the step baffle was softened and extended into a long roll-over, a major transformation that deeply changes the character of the mouthpiece:
– Softer, more vocal attack
– Warmer, denser, more expressive tone
– Powerful yet broader and more controlled projection
– Increased versatility and flexibility
Reproducing this unique mouthpiece required patience, precision, and passion. We analyzed the few available archives, cross-checked testimonies, and experimented at length to recover the exact settings of this exceptional piece.
The Pilgrimage is not merely inspired by Michael Brecker. It is a careful attempt to revive his last sound, the one he chose to close a life of sonic exploration and musical excellence. It is also a collector’s piece for any saxophonist attached to the living history of the instrument.
Living heritage, Mythic sound, Today’s vibration.
Every tenor saxophonist has dreamed of capturing that unmistakable breath, the blend of power, precision, and musicality embodied by Michael Brecker. Today, that quest takes shape with the MB1 Pilgrimage, a mouthpiece made for musicians, by a musician.
A Pilgrimage metal tenor saxophone mouthpiece is more than an accessory; it’s a direct link to a history, an aesthetic, and a standard of excellence.
Handcrafted in France, each Pilgrimage is play-tested, hand-refined, and adjusted before shipping. This level of care guarantees a perfect balance between artisanal character and modern consistency.

What’s the difference between the MB1 and the MB1 Pilgrimage?
The MB1 is a faithful remake of the original “Michael Brecker” model by Dave Guardala, played by Brecker in the 1980s. It offers a bright, rich, incisive tone loaded with overtones, ideal for fusion, funk, or rock.
The Pilgrimage is based on Brecker’s final mouthpiece as heard on Pilgrimage. Its long roll-over baffle brings more roundness and warmth to the timbre with a more supple expressiveness. Both share the same artisanal quality but target slightly different sonic worlds.
Is the Pilgrimage suitable for jazz?
YES. While designed with Michael Brecker’s sonic DNA, the Pilgrimage tenor sax mouthpiece adapts to many genres: jazz, funk, soul, rock, electronic, fusion, contemporary music, and even film scores. Its projection and flexibility let you move from ensemble playing to solo improvisation without losing precision.
Is the MB1 really handmade?
Yes. Every Pilgrimage tenor saxophone mouthpiece is designed, adjusted, and play-tested by hand in our French workshop. This artisanal process guarantees consistent acoustic performance while preserving each piece’s unique personality.
