F.A.Q.
What’s the difference between metal and hard rubber (ebonite) mouthpieces?
Metal Mouthpieces
Material: Crafted from brass, often gold- or silver-plated.
Sound: Bright, focused, and punchy—perfect for modern jazz, funk, or any genre where you need to stand out in the mix.
Projection: Powerful and effortless, designed to cut through in live performances or ensemble settings.
Feel: Crisp and responsive, with a thinner profile that offers precision in articulation—some describe it as “energetic” or “lively.”
Hard Rubber (Ebonite) Mouthpieces
Material: Made from premium vulcanized hard rubber, warm and smooth to the touch.
Sound: Rich, warm, and nuanced, with a rounded tone and subtle texture—ideal for traditional jazz, classical, or bossa nova.
Projection: Balanced and controlled, delivering a softer, more intimate presence—great for studio work or smaller venues.
Feel: Comfortable and natural in the mouth, with a warmer touch (especially in colder climates) and a slightly cushioned response.
Metal mouthpieces are often preferred by musicians seeking power, brilliance, and precision, while hard rubber mouthpieces appeal for their warmth, roundness, and comfort. It’s not about skill level (beginner vs pro), but rather personal taste and musical style.
At Les Becs d’Autan, we offer both styles with models like the MB1 (metal) and the Florida Slant (hard rubber), each carefully designed to reveal your unique sound.
How to clean and maintain a saxophone mouthpiece?
Regular Cleaning (After Each Session)
Rinse with lukewarm water: Run the mouthpiece under lukewarm water (never hot) without scrubbing hard.
Gently brush: Use a soft brush to remove saliva.
Dry thoroughly: Wipe with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid paper towels, as they can scratch the surface.
Deep Cleaning (1–2 Times per Month)
Gentle soak: Soak the mouthpiece for 5–10 minutes in a mixture of lukewarm water and white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water), then rinse thoroughly.
Optional disinfection: If sharing or after long periods of disuse, use a disinfectant spray designed for wind instruments (no alcohol or harsh solvents).
Precautions Do not use:
A dishwasher
Pure alcohol
Abrasive products
Hot water (can warp or weaken hard rubber)
Avoid:
Drops and impacts, especially for hard rubber mouthpieces or those with a thin tip.
Storage
Always store your mouthpiece in its case or a rigid mouthpiece case, separate from the saxophone. Never leave it on a stand or exposed to direct heat (e.g., in a car, near a radiator, or in sunlight).
A well-maintained mouthpiece retains its acoustic qualities and appearance for years. If your mouthpiece needs a refresh, Les Becs d’Autan offers expert refacing and restoration services.

I am very impressed with the MB1 I received from Philippe, it plays better than any Guardala style mouthpiece I have ever tried. He is really a master craftsman, the standard and accuracy of his work is amazing. I am able to get a wide-range of tonal colours from this mouthpiece, from a bright funky timbre to a soft, velvety subtone. It is very even tonally over the whole instrument, with a much more improved top end and wide dynamic range. If you are looking for a Guardala, don't go to the companies trading currently under his name, or buy a very expensive original on eBay - Go to Philippe.Publié sur Paolo SwuecTrustindex vérifie que la source originale de l'avis est Google. It has been now two months of playing on your Florida. This quick feedback just to say how great this mouthpiece is. It is my main one, and not for a single day I went back to my old picks. So, bravo. Excellent job! I have no clue how people can waste money on modern Otto link when they can buy yours (that are perfect out of the box).Publié sur Bill VillarrealTrustindex vérifie que la source originale de l'avis est Google. I received my Florida Meta tenor mouthpiece a couple of months ago and have been using it since then. I always find it takes me about a month to adjust to a new mouthpiece. I have to say this MPC is super fantastic. Free blowing with just enough resistance allowing me to get the sound I was looking for - warm but with some projection. A great purchase and worth the wait.Publié sur James WylieTrustindex vérifie que la source originale de l'avis est Google. Excellent mouthpieces, first rate craftsmanship and impressive communication and customer service. I purchased a florida model which was truly excellent but slightly different from what I was looking for. Although I wasn’t sure that I wanted risking changing it and losing what I loved about it, I decided to speak with Philippe about it. He replied within the hour with several proposals for baffle modifications that could achieve what I was looking for. I sent it to him and he achieved exactly what I was hoping for and now the mouthpiece is comfortable and even closer to what I was searching for. I would recommend Les Becs D’Autan to anyone who is looking for a serious mouthoiece. I only hope they start producing mouthpiece of this quality for alto and soprano…!Publié sur Steph saxTrustindex vérifie que la source originale de l'avis est Google. I received my hollywood tenor mouthpiece perfectly on time.
